Week 3 Reflection 5364

This has been a demanding week on me to complete this assignment. This assignment has taken a great deal of time to complete because I am not familiar with Biology. I basically had to teach myself the lesson before I could understand what I need to convey to the students. In my classroom I have a good idea of what I am going to be teaching every day. The lesson was very detailed compared to other lesson plan builders I had used. It was good because it thought about every detail that a teacher may need. I like working on the ebook. I think the program could also be a good assignment for students to make their own ebook.

Week 4 Reflection 5364

Week 4 had many topics that I thought were interesting. However, collaboration and students choice seem to catch my eye the most.  The following quote from Harness Your Students’ Digital Smarts from Vicki Davis is my favorite. “I believe every student can learn, every child can learn. But where children start having trouble is when you only have paper and pencil. Then only certain types of students are going to succeed.” I agree with her totally. I teach a class where students work on labs and projects with a review test at the end. Some of my students are good at taking test and other are good at building networks and computers. If I only test one of those skills then the student who is weaker in that area will suffer. I love using different technology in my class. I think it keeps the kids from being bored. The other theme that I kept seeing was the idea of collaboration. Most jobs in the world today have some form of collaboration between workers. In the video Team Teaching: Two Teachers, Three Subjects, One Project demonstrated the benefits of collaboration in the classroom. This type of learning helps prepare students get a job or succeed during college. Group projects and collaboration was a major change for me when I went to college. More classes should provide team teaching to prepare students for life after high school.

EDLD 5364 Week 2

Week 2 Reflection starts with the video "The Brain Research" from Lessonbuilder.cast.org.  I did not know how the brain has three different networks. The recognition network identifies how facts are gathered. The second network was the strategic network that deals with organization and performing of ideas. Affective network was last, the motivation and interest level of students is it focus. The next most important new idea for me was the Video "Principles of Universal Design for Learning" from the same site Lessonbuilder.cast.org. It helped clarify in simple terms what UDL stands for and represents (Universal Design for Learning). UDL is a method that uses many ways to help a student learn material in the best way for that student.  However, my favorite quote was from "Teaching Every Student in the Digital Age: Universal Design for Learning, Chapter 1 " it states that "The challenge posed by greater diversity and greater accountability is to enable students with widely divergent needs, skills, and interests to attain the same high standards." It basically states that each individual student can learn, but it is up to the teacher to find the key to unlock the student potential. Just as each person has a different fingerprint each person will learn in a different manner also. A teacher is more of a detective than a public speaker in the class of the future. The days of the great lecturer is over because the lecturer may not reach the student who learns best by doing for example. I feel many teachers should learn more about UDL to help their students reach their potential.

Week 1 EDLD 5364

This week I learned about the constructivist theory. It states that students learn new information by associating it with material that they already know. I agree with the constructivist theory because I feel that is the way that I learn myself.  I enjoyed the article by Dallas Mcpheeters on Social Networking Technologies in Education. It brought out some interesting points how Social Networks can be used to help education. I have had asked my school system about using Facebook as a communication tool and have been told not at this time. It is amazing how long it takes technology to become mainstream in schools compared to the public. Lastly, I watched the video Cyborg Learning Theory by K Warwirk. It was a little disturbing to see how close we are to becoming man and machine. In the future instead of needing to remember things we can just upload our memory with new data like a machine.

EDLD 5366 Assignment 1.2

Hebrew manuscripts: History and scope 1

Document can be found at

http://www.bl.uk/reshelp/findhelplang/hebrew/manuscripts/foundationcoll/large14195.html

I chose the Hebrew manuscripts: History and scope 1. The design was very basic compared to modern works. There was some bold fonts used in a few pictures for contrasting. Then white space was used throughout the manuscript for proximity. Also, alignment was used throughout the manuscript with a left alignment for each paragraph. However that was little repetitions used except for hyperlinks. The picture had different sizes of fonts for contrast. This manuscript is one very old and conveys a simpler time then the time we now live.
